Hi Tom,

Why do you think this is a unit train of coal? All you can see in the photo is about a dozen cars, It might be a cut of loaded hoppers at the front of a regular mixed freight train.

Colstrip, MT on the NP would be my guess as to where that train was loaded.

There are several slides right now on eBay of a BN coal train in July 1970 heading eastbound through Savanna.

Here is the train coming toward the camera showing it to clearly be a coal train with a mix of various hoppers: https://www.ebay.com/itm/B72-BN-GN-Great-Northern-5710-GE-U33C-Savanna-IL-07-12-1970-Original-Slide/254761392862?hash=item3b50f65ade:g:3k4AAOSwGb9fmJu5

Here it is going away showing the first car is GN 70838, a hopper loaded with coal: https://www.ebay.com/itm/C78-BN-GN-Great-Northern-Coal-Train-Savanna-IL-07-12-1970-Original-Slide/254762348856?hash=item3b5104f138:g:fGwAAOSwI~dfmZfh

The only place I could think of where a solid eastbound coal train like this would be coming from is the Powder River Basin. Or is it coming from perhaps somewhere else?

The bigger question I have, however, is whether these trains were started after the merger, or did some of these coal drags run pre-merger on the Q in 1969 or early 1970?
