While driving a crew bus I was instructed to pick up a Santa Fe crew at
the first crossing east of Lovewell, Kansas in what was in a barren
area, as the engineer was about out of time. When I arrived I parked
just off the graveled county road where I could observe a train coming
from the east. A farmer came by on his tractor, stopped and inquired if
I was lost, to which I replied I was not. The "Do you need help?' he
ask, the answer again was no. He finally ask what I was doing, to which
I replied "The engineer on train coming in the distance is dead in 15
minutes, I have to pick him up and haul him into Superior, Nebraska. One
look and the farmer put the tractor into gear and off he went in a hurry
to tell his wife about the dead engineer.

In explaining to a citizen a brief explanation of railroad operation I
said after completing their duties at the end of their shift, they tie
down their locomotive and tie up for the night. To this someone once ask
what they have to be tied up, in the old days after several hours in a
tavern it was sometimes an idea they should be tied up. Richard
