Thanks for posting that photo, Ken. It’s the first one I’ve see showing the corrugated siding. After seeing the siding, I understand why our model siding doesn’t scale well on a selectively compressed structure. I think the only way to model the elevator is to either use Evergreen V-groove siding (0.025 in. thick with 0.64 mm groove spacing) for cribbing or corrugated siding (0.010 in. thick with 0.25 mm rib width) for metal clad. The panels would have to be painted by masking in horizontal strips. Nether styrene thickness is self-supporting, so the siding would have to be applied of a 0.040 in. core structure.

 

Yes, the elevator as wood crib construction. We know it was still mineral red in early 1957 if we believe Spoor, and I’m sure it was red in 1954 from another picture. I attached the 1952 update to the Burlington Sanborn map for your examination. A note on the elevator states, “corrugated iron siding”. The steam plant is still shown on the map. The elevator is still labeled Burlington & Mississippi,  so the elevator must have had metal siding much earlier than 1952 and the metal siding would have been painted mineral red. I don’t know when the elevator got the corrugated metal siding, but the Sanborn map suggests it was part of the original construction. The siding thus predated ADM ownership by a long time.

 

I don’t know how much updating occurred when Sanborn maps were updated in 1952, and I don’t know if the steam plant was still operational in 1952. I would think not. I don’t know when the stack was truncated, but that was probably when the steam plant ceased operation. It’s sad that we don’t have records of the entire history of the elevator.

The elevator was a wood building thats why it was painted red. The gray was from metal plated placed over it..

 

I will guess the siding was added when ADM took over the building.

 

Here is a photo I took in 1980 showind the siding.

Here’s a glimpse of the mineral red elevator behind the depot in 1955. While it doesn’y impact you model,the second isfrom April of ’57 showing it was a greyish, almost a flat aluminum color, not white.
