Brian,

Those three are older HO scale Oriental Limited E8's.  I model 1950, so none of the first several orders of E8 had the stainless steel plymetal panels.  They were done with the Scalecoat I Aluminum and baked at 170° for 45 minutes to drive off the solvents.  This is not a necessary step, I just prefer to bake any brass I'm painting.  The chip I attached is the Tru-Color TCP-013 Aluminum.  Despite what they say about spraying Tru-Color directly without thinning, I find you have to cut it with about 20% thinner to spray it well at around 20 - 25 psi.  People say you can use regular Acetone, but I use their proprietary thinner.  You need to put the Tru-Color on "wet" and you get a glossy finish to decal over, before clear coating with a satin.

I'm assuming you are doing the 996X chicken wire F3's?  I'd use the same color for those, and yes, you should be able to do all three with a 1 oz bottle.

If you have any specific questions on painting these, feel free to private message me so I don't bore the list to death...

Your baking looks delicious! Were they painted with Scalecoat or Tru-Color? And they look like American Models E8's in S scale, which is just what I purchased. I also have two F3's to do in the aluminum paint -- do I assume that just one 1 oz bottle is sufficient for all three?

Brian,

I prefer an Aluminum looking paint to silver.  I've always used Scalecoat I solvent-based Aluminum for painting brass shells.  Here are three fresh from the oven!  With the demise of Scalecoat, future E units will be done in Tru-Color TCP-013 Aluminum (below.)  Tru-Color is also a solvent-based paint, so one should be sure to prime the plastic shell with a fine surface primer like Tamiya #87064 (in a spray can.)

I have just purchased an undecorated E8 locomotive and wish to make it into E9 #9995. I have a bottle of Badger acrylic paint #16-114 Gloss Silver. Is that the best choice for my locomotive?
