Brian,

I assume you are referring the "abbreviated" strip as it pertains to the center of the engine between portholes.

I think the early versions were Phase 1 and included 116 to 125.

Phase 3 removed the chicken wire and as a result, the Q painted the strip across the entire engine.

I am sure that others may have more info, but this is what I know.

Gentlemen:

I am an S scale modeler of the CB&Q. I have three F3's - 121A & 121B and 135A. On my models both 121A and 135A have the 'abbreviated' red stripe on the sides and I believe 135A is incorrect.  I have read and reread Bulletin No. 4 and there is no mention of the striping on the Graybacks. But in the photos it looks as though only 116 to 125 have the abbreviated stripe where all else have the full stripe. Can anyone confirm my observations?
