Leo/Ken - I agree with Leo on the origin of the name carvings.  This has been going on since humans walked the earth, leaving their names and symbols on cave/cliff walls, the Sphinx and on up to today's graffiti.  Let me suggest you check census records of that era for Pilot Grove.  Census records are really the jumping off point for any kind of serious genealogical search.  Plus, census records usually list occupations so that will help to narrow your search.  I certainly hope the carved names are not painted over during the depot's restoration - Louis

Another source. Any nearby newspaper might carry stories about Pilot Grove with peoples names. Check the cemetery markers.
