The official (CB&Q) drawing No 31115 has, as the data block: Burlington Trade
Mark. This is for freight cars, 1943-1950. It is not a "color" logo, but
the black & white version.

Semantics & "standards" in corporate world are always entertaining. There is
one drawing that has a few dozen heralds, and that drawing terms the images as
"Trade Marks". The official CGW Corn Belt drawing indicated "Herald". SP
Common Standard drawings indicate "Medallion." GE on an order for RDG called
it a "Logo." Budd's version for the MD Transit called it a "Logo." Budd for
Amtrak, a "Logo." Budd for Metro Rail called it a "Logo." C&O, an "Insignia,
" Evans an "Insignia", GN a "Monogram", etc.

One aspect is that there are multiple terms used for the same thing, by the
same company (or referencing the same company). Builder, unless otw notified,
called it what they thought was right, railfans, railroaders and modelers all
call it what they want. Railroaders can be a particularly stubborn bunch, it
is what they say it is and no one, not management, not corporate, not the
builders - no one can tell them otherwise.

Then there is the AAR/ARA and other government entities standards for reporting
marks & heralds. They have their own style guide. I haven't looked lately at
the field manual's definition for freight car painting (they have one for all
equipment - as does the military).
