Greetings everyone,
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
I need some help, please. On my “to do list” are two models of Colorado & Southern way cars, or more correctly two models of way car #10538, frequenter on the Denver Division (aka the “Joint Line”), at two different time periods (May 1938 and July 1951). My interests are twofold: 1. An amateur academic in the AT&SF’s Denver Division history and operations, and 2. A HO model of Colorado Springs with emphasis on operations. Hol. Wagner’s “Colorado Road” indicates that #10538 was built as a side door way car in 1907 and Sutton’s “Trackside Around Pueblo” indicates that it was rebuilt in 1944 (after the 10598- 10612 series ?). At least some of the C&S way cars had steel underframes to enable a helper engine to push on the way car of heavy trains such as trains carrying hematite out of CF&I’s Sunrise Mine, WY bound for smelters near Pueblo, CO. My questions are: 1. Were all C&S way cars built to the same (approximate) floor plan? 2. Was #10538 rebuilt in 1944 to remove side doors and the internal layout altered to ‘standard’? 3. Was the #10538 rebuild on a steel
underframe? An internet search indicates a C&S way car numbered #10538 is being or has been restored in Pueblo. Has anyone an idea who owns the car?
