Hi Louis and group.  There is a photo of a crew with a “Mankiller” pole on page 433 of the Quincy branch book.    My crew used a tie a couple of times, usually on the Alpha to Joy branch.

Winton - Hell's bells, I'd clear out FAST too if I had been in the way of that old tie being used for poling......

This link explains poling:

Back in my largely misspent youth, I worked at a large scrap yard that was big enough to have its own industrial railroad.  Poling was occasionally used to spot gon loads of scrap on sidings, but instead of a wood pole or tie, liftable size steel pipes or I-beams were used - Louis

Here is a photo of poling when you don't have an official pole and cannot use the poling pockets. The loco was originally coupled to the near end of the hopper and the hopper was dropped passed the loco, but it stopped while still barely fouling the switch. Because of this the loco could not get out of the spur. So a handy old tie was use to pole the car several feet TOWARDS the camera so it would clear the spur track allowing the loco to get out. Normally this move would have been made in the opposite direction by placing the much longer & stronger official pole between the loco's & the hopper's pole pockets and then shoving the car away from the photographer (me) back across the switch so the loco could get out. Instead of using the unreachable poling pockets the crew had to use the journal boxes on the loco's and the hopper's trucks. Yes poling was dangerous.
