[CBQ] B.R.H.S. Bulletin #76 -Greyhounds

B.R.H.S. Bulletin #76, entitled “Engine 590 and the Greyhounds”arrived here 
on the Fox River branch on Monday. I finished reading it late last night. I had 
a hard time putting it down. Learned a lot.

When you come to the first full paragraph of the right hand column on page 23 
where “Greg’s Hill” is referenced and wonder where was that? “Greg’s” is listed 
in a 1895 Q ETT about where Westmont,IL is today. I believe the time period of 
this Bulletin predates the large grade reduction later done by the Q at that 
location. Anyone who has ridden trains westbound down Westmont hill knows what 
a push it gives the train. I can only imagine what it must have been like when 
the hill was several feet higher.

I’m looking forward to a future Bulletin article, that is in the queue, which 
will again involve the acceleration experienced when riding down “Greg’s Hill” 
westbound, about a half century later.
