[CBQ] BRHS Spring Meet Batavia,IL

I encourage BRHS members and friends to attend the 2025 spring meet at 
Batavia,IL 
On May 3rd.
I am looking forward to the swap session as it always brings members together 
in conversations about the Q.
In the afternoon I am anticipating the presentation on wheel reports ( I sure 
looked at many of those in a waycar in my day) and other presentations.

My afternoon presentation on the Sugar Grove gravel spur will highlight the 
constant search for ballast by the Q. And why it was necessary.  There  will 
also be a bit of earth science class to understand where early ballast deposits 
came from. 
I will introduce it with never before seen family photos of the Montgomery 
stock yard in pre 1920’s and pre elevation photos (these became available to 
the BRHS at the Sugar Grove presentation in the spring of 2024). Why these ? 
Because Montgomery was the Q’s very first ballast pit. How do I know, because 
Jim Singer of the archives gave me a copy of the first engineering survey of 
the Q mainline showing two switches into the Montgomery gravel pit in the 
1850s. Then when Montgomery played out the Q went to Sugar Grove for ballast. 
When Sugar Grove played out where did the Q go next, you need to come to the 
spring meet to find out ! 

My evening, after dinner presentation will give a quick reference to pre 1900 
operations on the West Chicago branch and then focus on highlights(Can’t get 
into minute details in a short presentation) of the 20th century operations on 
the branch. This branch went from “not of much value” in the 1865/66 annual 
report to one of the Qs most profitable branches in the late 1960’s.
How? Well you have to come to the meet.
