I will throw my two cents in. I don’t think they are turrets for a couple of reasons. One, they are sitting up high on some other parts of the machinery. Turrets would ride lower.  Also, in 1948 the Navy had surplus from WWII and while there was modernization and refurbishing going on, not sure if that much was happening three years after the war.

Looking at the curved part sticking up, it looks like a shot to me, similar to a snowblower or connected to some other ducting at the final location.
