As general information it’s been quite a few years now (I’m thinking close to 10 or more) since the AAR passed a rule that gondolas cannot be loaded above the top rail.

The old days of heaping scrap or other material into a nice rounded hill in the car are gone.

I frequently go train-watching along the K Line between West Alton and Peruque in St Charles County and several times I have seen trains consisting of nothing but gondolas. I've seen them going both directions. They are a mishmash of different types, raod names, ages, and physical condition, from beaten up to nearly new.

What is the purpose of these trains? Each one has about 75 gondolas and I cannot see anything sticking above the edges.
