Leo,

The Lake States FR Ritzman collection has eight shots of this wreck, but they date it as 7/12/65.  Both this slide and the Ritzman shots show C&NW engine 1566 cleaning up the mess.  You didn't mention the Q rail detector set sitting on the main in the lower left hand side.  Pretty interesting!

I have also heard that the Q would handle ore trains in winter, but they would usually go down from Savanna to Galesburg to avoid the C&I 's  hills.  The late George Spier, however, had said he had seen a winter ore train come down the C&I.  That's an interesting question.

Thought I’d point out an eBay photo posted today for those following and anyone interested in what Ive been describing about handling ore trains on the C&I in my article in the Friends of BN articles.

Search eBay using CBQ and collectible or item number 116438325542.
What your viewing is an eastbound ore train that derailed on or close to the CNW/CBQ diamond at Rochelle in October 1965. Looks like the CNW has wreckers working on both sides of the pile. Q probably working from both sides also.

This view is from the west looking east on the CNW. The CNW wrecker is on the Del Monte plant 199 lead.

What I’m wondering about is what the old Q guys talked about and my experiences on BN that the ore trains ran in the depth of winters when the Great Lakes froze over. This photo clearly shows one in early October before the leaves have changed.

Can’t  help but think about how the CNW tower operator must have felt watching this pile build up literally at his door step?! Wonder if this was the event that led to removal of the tower ? Sure looks like it couldn’t help but get hit by all of this rolling mess.
