Interesting about the use of hyphens in locomotive classes. For the steam era, from the photos I have on hand it appears the Burlington didn't use any hyphens on class markings on the loco cabs. What the BRHS calls an O-2A, for example, was marked on the locos as O2A. Probably not totally consistent, but it's like that on all the loco photos I have (only about a dozen).

Also, I think there might be an error in the class list. Dave shows the O-4 as a 4-8-4, but I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) that the O-4 class were Mikados (2-8-2's).

Beyond that, every railroad assigned class numbers as they chose. There wasn't much, if any, consistency between railroads. A couple of examples: On the Great Northern the P class were Mountains (4-8-2) while on the Burlington they were Atlantics (4-4-2). The S class were Northerns (4-8-4) on the GN, and on the Burlington they were Pacifics (4-6-2) or Hudsons (4-6-4).
