Burlington's Spectacular Steam Program

The Center's newest book,

featuring the photography of John Gruber

with essays by Norm Carlson and Justin Franz

CB&Q 5632 steams along the Mississippi River at Victory, Wisconsin, in July 1961. Gruber-03-025-182.

In the 1950s and 1960s, no railroad could top the steam program of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy. The “Q”—as its many admirers affectionately knew it—operated more than 260 steam trips that carried more than 100,000 riders and left impressions on countless more trackside admirers. Burlington’s Spectacular Steam Program features the sensational photojournalism of John Gruber, who photographed at least twenty-seven of the famous excursions.

This softcover book features nearly 100 of Gruber’s best black-and-white Burlington steam photographs, beautifully printed. The lead essay by Norm Carlson draws on his first-hand experience with Q steam trips and his wide network of fellow enthusiasts who shared their memories. Additional text by Justin Franz provides background about the two principal locomotives, 4960 and 5632, and the last run from Chicago to Denrock, Illinois. Scott Lothes served as editor, selecting the photographs and writing captions.

About the Center for Railroad Photography & Art
The Center is a member-support 501(c)(3) not-for-profit arts and education organization that achieves its mission through exhibitions, conferences, and publications that spring from its core commitment to collect, preserve, and then make widely available imagery that portrays the nearly 200-year history of railroads. While based in Madison, Wisconsin, the Center does not maintain a museum space or large facilities but instead collaborates on its many projects with individuals and institutions ranging from museums and universities to libraries and historical societies. This approach allows the Center to focus on railroad imagery and the profound and moving stories it can tell.
