Since we're talking about mines, you have an opportunity to see 30 images of the Valier Mine on the new BRHS SmugMug photo site.  These were a series of photo taken by company photographer Fred W Lehmann in 1949, for appraisal purposes.  It is speculated the Burlington may have been preparing to sell the mine at this date.

To do this you need to go to the website (burlingtonroute.org) and do the following:

Go to the Route Map (far left side) and click on Archives.

From the Archives page, click on the "Click Here for SmugMug"

Read the Usage Guidelines and Restrictions, then acknowledge the rules and click on "View Collection."

You will be on the Site Homepage.  From here you can view and maneuver around the site numerous different ways, but an easy initial way is to go to the far right and hit the "Search Site" button.  You can type in coal, or coal mine, or mine, in the dialog box, but the 30 images are all together so if you type in the SmugMug identifier 1806 and hit enter, you will get image 1806.

Click on the thumbnail, and it will bring up photo 1806.  Embedded information regarding the photo is attached to the picture.  You can click the "Photo Details" button (the circle with an "I" in it.)

To move through the series you can either click the arrow on the far right of the screen, or use your right arrow key on your keyboard.

This is certainly not the best way to look at images, but it's good for this circumstance.  If you're interested in more ways to navigate the site, they did record the clinic on using SmugMug at Mendota and they will likely post it in a few weeks.   We currently have over 1150 high resolution scans on the site.

Should you want to purchase a photo or digital image, read the instructions on the "BRHS Archives Images Offered for Purchase From SmugMug."  I personally prefer the high-resolution images, as those can be blown up to a very large size to view details within the photo.

Questions can be sent to the list and we will do our best to answer them.
