Maybe I should have said that the fading on the “305” appears to be similar in age to the rest of the stencil, as opposed to a new stencil applied on BN after 1970.

Rupert - The "305" is a different font than the car number, so very likely painted on at some later date. Still, and I've looked at countless images, this is the first car I've seen numbered in this way - Louis

  That number (305) is most likely a Pool code, This boxcar is most likely in auto parts service and the code lets the car clerks know where it is to be routed  loaded and empty.

What is unusual is the number 305 stencilled above the road number. It appears, by its condition, to have been applied at the same time as the other stencils. Any suggestions as to its purpose?
