I found the book on line a few years ago.  It’s an excellent read and a great story on how they worked to make the towns understand that the BN could not keep subsidizing commuter operations.

The Friends of the Burlington Northern is offering the “History of the West Suburban Mass Transit District”. The district helped fund the Q/BN Chicago suburban operations before the creation of Metra. The book was written by T.G. (Ted) Schuster who was a Q/BN executive instrumental in working with the western suburbs to create the district.

He was unsuccessful in getting the book published before he passed away but Earl Currie added some details and did publish the book on a limited basis. The FOBNR has the permission of both the Schuster and Currie families to publish the book.

A few years ago I purchased a copy from Earl Currie and read the book. If you’re interested in the inner workings of the suburban operations at a management level and the details of the work to create the district you will enjoy the read.
