[CBQ] Sand Drying House at Burlington

In the early 1950s, a small brick sand drying house with a wood hopper above it was located between the coal pocket and sand tower. Unobstructed pictures of the sand house are few, and the sand house stack and the top of the wood hopper seems to have changed over the years. I have pictures of the stack as steel stovepipe and brick chimney, and pictures of the hopper top open and what appears to be a roof. I have attached two photos showing these variations.

 

My questions are, is this the same location in both photos? Note that the coal pocket in the open top hopper photo has a protective cover next to the chutes, while there is no protective cover next to the chutes in the other photo with the roofed hopper. Unfortunately, I don’t have the date of the second photo. Perhaps the date can be approximated from locomotive assignments for CB&Q 2158 and CB&Q 4997.

 

Next question is, if the hopper had an open top, was sand loaded with the same clamshell crane that loaded the coal pocket? How was sand supplied if the hopper had a roof? Later in the BN era, the wood hopper was removed, along with the coal pocket, and sand was delivered in box cars and shoveled into a small metal hopper inside the brick drying house.

 

I’ve drawn plans to build the sand house and sand tower, and I need to know which chimney to build and whether or not the wood sand hopper had a roof.
