Rupert - Per your inquiry about Q steam power used in Suburban Territory during 1914, our own Bill Barber, Bob Campbell and Hol Wagner are all knowledgeable on this subject.  Me, to a lesser degree....

Suburban steam commenced with Class A 4-4-0s and, as trains grew heavier, moved on to Class K 4-6-0s and Class P 4-4-2s.  In later years, once again as trains grew heavier, Class S 4-6-2s took over and following World War Two several Class S 4-6-4s also made brief appearances prior to dieselization.

I've never seen an article about exactly how steam power developed over the years in Suburban Territory. That in itself would make for an interesting story.  You can trace the development and more-or-less date the transition from one wheel arrangement to another through images posted in BRHS Flicker.

My educated guess would be that Class K 4-6-0s were standard Suburban Territory motive power in 1914. They would've been modified by having their mid-boiler mounted bells moved forward to directly behind the stacks and large "ash can size" turbo generators mounted in their place.  This shows in images.

Once such modified Class K 4-6-0s were replaced by larger Class P 4-4-2s and Class S 4-6-2s, their turbo generators were removed, but the bells stayed in place behind the stacks.  In images taken years later, you can always spot an ex-Suburban Territory Class K or P locomotive by the bell placement.

Thanks for all your continued efforts to record Q history, in particular all the minute details of unusual incidents now lost to the ages except in archived newspaper and magazine articles that you come across. Incidentally, motion picture nitrate film of that era was highly flammable and would burn fiercely  - Louis

Thanks for the response. Is it possible to get a scan of weekday westward suburban trains from the 1911 timetable, please? And the front cover if possible?

My
article is about a fire which occurred on an evening suburban service from CUS in November 1914, just after California Avenue, in which two passengers died and 36 others were injured. The fire, in a baggage/smoker, was caused by a package of movie films on its way to a suburban cinema. It would seem that it was placed on the floor during the journey and a lighted cigarette was dropped onto it. Although I have various reports and newspaper clippings about it, I would like to fill in details such as the length of the journey, type of locomotive on the front, etc.

A Collector’s Corner sounds like a good idea. I have been collecting scans from eBay of timetable covers for the Flickr collection in case I needed them for an article.

I’ve been invited by the NZ Railway & Locomotive Historical Society to give a presentation at one of their meetings and I rashly agreed, so I have been busy putting together a PowerPoint presentation. I’ll cover the formation of the CB&Q in Illinois with just a brief history of expansion, plus what made the Burlington different from all the others. Things such as Zephyrs, dome cars, motor cars, center cab diesels and its waycars. Fortunately, I’ve plenty of photos including the Flickr collection so there is no shortage of material.

Anyway, thanks again for your help.

Regards

Rupert

Rupert

I do not have a 1914 Sub TT but do have a 5/28/1911, 10/31/1926, 4/19/1934

See Attached for unupdated list of collection.  I Need to update it and have just won a large order of Publics now awaiting shipment.

What do you think of a Collectors Corner using the lists attached.  I would only do one part of the list.

ie.  Employee Timetables have been covered by PK Hannah's Compendium.  My lists would be used

Public Timetables  The red covers. Part 2 would be The modern Photo Print TT from May-Oct 1966-Jan 18 1970  With the photos.  Part 3 would be Suburban TT Part 4  Memo TT  10/28/66-1/18/70

Just got home from Florida and a Family Reunion where I picked up some neat Family items for my wife's side.  Her grandfather worked in the Aurora Shops and a Great Uncle was an engineer.

Let me know and I can get scans for you and Dave both.

I’m researching Burlington suburban services out of Chicago in about 1914 for a BRHS article. Would anyone have a suburban timetable for about that period. If so, I would be grateful if you would contact me off list. (Hit Reply to Sender at the bottom of this e-mail) Also what sort of power would have been used in that era?

Thanks
