Thanks Leo,
I was privileged to know Ray for a few years as a member of the Fox Valley Veterans Breakfast Club. We sat by each other for many breakfasts. For those that don't know, Ray was a member of the Army Air Corp. He flew as tail gunner on B17 Flying Fortresses over Germany. If flight crews made 25 bombing runs, which most did not return from before hitting that number, they would be rotated home. Ray made 29 bombing runs. I feel very fortunate to have had Ray as a friend. We shared
being aircraft machine gunners, as I flew as door gunner on Huey helicopters in Vietnam.

Thank you, Jim Davidson

Thanks Tom,

A few us on this list worked with Ray. He often told the story of coming back to the Aurora roundhouse after WWII to see the handwriting on the wall as diesels eliminated the roundhouse shop craft positions. He decided to go “firing”. He would reminisce about the “10 years of shoveling coal”.
Almost everyone on the RR had a nickname. Rays’ was “sweet corn”. And yes there’s a story behind the name.

Now for those of who were at the Savanna meet and listened to the “Laying over at Savanna” presentation Ray was one of the few who didn’t venture far from the hotel.
He could be seen sitting in one of the high backed chairs for hours talking with his fellow railroaders.

A unique trait of Rays was he never, ever, ever broke the speed limit. This earned him his second nickname of grandma. But you never got into trouble with Ray either.

According to his obituary Ray worked the CB&Q Aurora roundhouse and was later a CB&Q locomotive engineer.
