I’m really pressed for time working on another presentation coming up on June 1 along with work duties. As you know I maintain a large database of railroad histories, locations, facilities, structures and a large Bibliography. In the section dealing with the histories of locations, facilities and structures (now over 25,000 entries) I maintain an "overview" record of important (and many less important) cities focusing on when these cities were founded, what dominated the growth of the city, and the importance of the railroads that served Batavia. I am hoping to make most of this data open to public access by the end of the year.
I grew up in Oswego (near Aurora) and am very familiar with the development of Aurora. Batavia is a little further up the Fox River, and I am less familiar with its development.
I do know that the Burlington, the C&NW and the Chicago, Aurora & Elgin (and maybe its predecessor the Aurora, Elgin & Chicago) maintained depots in Batavia. The city also served as the terminus for the Batavia & Eastern Interurban ( incorporated by the Cleveland Syndicate in 1901) and the Geneva, Batavia & Southern Railway (Geneva-Batavia; also incorporated by the Cleveland Syndicate in 1901).
Can you provide a brief synopsis of your Batavia presentation to this group? I would like to add your comments to my data.
