From Burlington Bulletin #10 on the E-units:

"The louvered air filter door located behind the cab door on each
side of the E7's was removed from over half the units in the late
Forties and early Fifties, replaced by a smooth sheet metal door
which was used for removing and replacing the two main air
reservoirs. On E7's and earlier E's the No. 1 main reservoir was
located in the engine compartment behind the rear car bulkhead on the
left side, with No. 2 reservoir opposite it on the righthand side. In
other words, both reservoirs were located right behind the former
airfilter doors on the E7's and when the air filter doors were found
to be unnecessary - at least on some of the E7's - the doors
continued to be used for maintenance purposes. On other E7's the
louvered doors remained in use to the end."
