[CBQ] Ding car La Crosse

I am trying to find out what happened to dining car La Crosse built in 1886 by Barney & Smith for the CB&N and which was listed in the CB&N ORER’s until June 1900. (The CB&N had been deeded to the CB&Q in June 1899.) The May and November 1901 CB&Q ORER’s then listed la Crosse with other CB&Q dining cars, as did the May and July 1902 ORER’s.

According to four railroad trade magazines reporting in October and November 1902, the CB&Q “had just” completed a new dining car La Crosse at Aurora, the plans having been made in the company’s offices. The wording of the articles indicates that this was a completely new car and not a remodelling of the old car.

What happened to the old La Crosse? I don’t have an ORER between November 1901 and May 1902 to see if the car was listed between those dates. I suppose it is possible that the first La Crosse was wrecked or scrapped between these dates and a new one built in time for the May 1902 edition. If so, would they have kept the name or used a different one?

In passing, the second La Crosse was destroyed in a fire in 1913, details of which are given in Zephyr 63 on pages 24-26.
