Every spring, the local 2nd graders visit the Dover Museum in New London where we have activities for them.  Yesterday, our CB&Q Pilot Grove depot became 1/3 of the visit.  A local BNSF engineer is also the area Operation Lifesaver presenter.  He took the day off to run nine sessions with the kids.  They all received Sly Fox and Birdie coloring books and a box of BNSF colored pencils.  (I would imagine that adult collectors would also want those pencils.)  The kids also saw photos of what the New London depot looked like as well as the water tower and coaling tower.  They were also introduced to the telegraph in the agent's office, which was something they had never seen before.  All 57 of them got to send their first name on the key.  Then it was time to look at railroad tools displayed in the back room.  A retired Burlington employee was there to show them to the kids and answer questions.

We now have 57 kids that are smarter than the media.  They know what an engineer is and who runs the train.  They know that they can get hurt if they hang around the tracks or railroad property.  They will also be waving at passing trains knowing they might get a whistle response.  It was totally worth it.
