Glen - Bill Franckey just passed back the following ID on the documentary photo you inquired about:

… photo taken 1951 as Lou Owens last of the “joint right” engrs (Galesburg-Aurora) retires. L to R:  Jimmy Owens Aurora engr, Lou Owens, Larry Owens E. Ottumwa engr, Jeff Owens fireman, Mary Owens CB&Q offices Chgo, and Lisle Owens Aurora engr.
I fired for both Jim and Larry on passenger. Nobody faster than Jim.

Glen - That particular image did not come out of BRHS Flickr, so it must've come from Bill's large collection of Galesburg photos.

I've copied this to Bill.  His retirement home is in the mountains of Tennessee, so his daily Internet service can be spotty at best.

Bill will eventually see this Email and if the 'Net is up and working, he will hopefully answer back accordingly.  Thanks - Louis

This was a very entertaining documentary.  I am curious about the photo of the six people in front of the E unit at about 2:04:45 to 2:04:50 in the film, and what it was that caused them to be photographed together.  I am fairly certain that the 3rd person from the right is Don (D.V.) Sartore, who was Chief Engineer of the CB&Q from about 1966 to merger.  He was the Q's Bridge Engineer prior to succeeding E. J. Brown as Chief Engineer, and became the youngest CE of a railroad at the age of 36.  After the merger, he was Chief Engineer Design in St. Paul, and both the BN Director of Bridge Engineering and Director of Building Engineering reported to him.  He retired in Florida, and the last I heard was still alive in his early 90's.

Does anyone recognize any of the other 5 people in this view?

All - William "Bill" Franckey, a retired CB&Q/BN/BNSF locomotive engineer and lifetime railroad historian has just uploaded to YouTube his masterful two hour and sixteen minute video documentary "Steam To Stainless" that records the transition from steam to diesel on the Galesburg Division:

Bill comes from a generational railroad family of locomotive engineers dating back over a hundred years. During his career, Bill sat down and interviewed senior or retired Galesburg Division engineers and other mechanical department employees to record their work life memories.

This is a very personalized documentary that focuses upon the everyday life of engine crews and the many challenges they faced in getting their steam and diesel powered trains over the Division either west to Ottumwa, IA, or east to Chicago, IL (Cicero and Chicago Union Station).

Plus, Bill interviewed retired Galesburg Roundhouse employees including a steam locomotive boiler maker and diesel locomotive electrician who maintained the motive power to get the trains over the Division. There is a wealth of information in these interviews that is seldom heard elsewhere.

The Burlington Route Historical Society is in the process of adding Bill's documentary to the video area of their website. Included in the video are a number of interesting historical photos and motion picture segments depicting Galesburg railroad scenes over the past hundred plus years - Louis
