Looking again at the LOC photo (for the misplaced apostrophe), box car 13814 (second from the left on the main track) was built in 1884 at Aurora and doesn’t have a herald, so we can date the herald’s introduction to 1884-5.

I doubt it. Freight cars just had the road name / initials and a number until the Burlington Route herald appeared on them, in about 1884/5. There is a photo taken at Plattsmouth in 1885 on page 46 of Burlington Bulletin 25 showing some cars with the herald. Perhaps someone has an earlier one.

I’ve attached part of a Library of Congress photo of Aurora in the 1880’s and none of the cars have logos.

Archie and Rupert, thanks so much for the replies and especially for the photos.  I still hope someone will know whether that logo was ever used on rolling stock too.
