Thanks, Rich. I knew that the Havelock economy baggage cars got ribbon font, and are circa 1953, and I knew that the troop kitchens with open windows had Railroad Roman while the plated windows had ribbon font, so I had narrowed it down to about the same dates as you did.

 

The question came up because I’m building several baggage cars for the Zephyr Rocket, and all but one of the cars has ribbon font, but I don’t have the dates of the photos. It’s doubtful that all of the old wood baggage cars used on the ZR would have a high priority for new paint, so I was expecting more Railroad Roman lettering. I need more photos of ZR head end equipment.

I'm sure that there is someone who knows for sure what was the "first" application, but here is what I know.  The converted Troop kitchens in 1947-48 did not initially have the new lettering.  The modernized suburban coaches in 1949 did have the new lettering. As far as I know the suburban cars that were painted in different paints schemes to be voted on by the commuters were the first to have the ribbon font applied. The new font really took off in the early 50's with repainting and conversions.
