Congratulations Dale!

(You should have guessed earlier)

Here are the details:

The tricky part of this quiz is that it did not leave Grand Island on CB&Q rails!  The destination for the Pullman was Kansas City.  It operated out of Grand Island on the St. Joseph & Grand Island Railway (Union Pacific) south to Concordia, Kansas, then west to that ended up running over a Santa Fe line across the Missouri River at Atchison, still operated by the St. Joseph & Grand Island Railway (StJ&GI)

Starting at Trumbull it traveled on the Quincy, Omaha and Kansas City (QO&KC) which was owned by the Q.  It traveled 13 miles over the QO&KC to get to Kansas City.  The depot was near the Missouri River, not the large Union Station as it had yet to be built. This car also ran on the Milwaukee.

The Northern Railroad Company, organized by Kansas City interests, on May 19, 1898, completed a 10.47-mile branch line between the Omaha, Kansas City & Eastern (OKC&E, a predecessor to the QO&KC) mainline at Trimble, Mo., north to Gower, Mo., connecting to the AT&SF branch between St. Joseph and Henrietta, Mo.  Subsequently, the Gower branch was leased to the StJ&GI, including trackage rights over the OKCE between Trimble and Avon (later Avondale) and then to a recently completed connection with the CMStP&P at a location called Northern Junction at the foot that road's Missouri River Choteau bridge. Trackage rights over the CMStP&P line brought the StJ&GI trains to a connection with the Kansas City Suburban Belt Railroad in the northeast river bottoms called Suburban Junction, and on to the Kansas City, Pittsburg & Gulf's freight yards and Grand Central station at 2nd & Wyandotte.  On March 20, 1902, the CB&Q acquired the OKCE via the bankrupt QO&KC.  Under Burlington ownership, the QO&KC built a connection from their line at Avon, Mo., to the CB&Q rails at block 22 in North Kansas City.

On the 30th of October 1913, the new Kansas City Union Depot was opened. The old Kansas City Southern Railway depot at 2nd and Wyandotte was closed. Earlier, in January of 1913, a new interurban line, the Kansas City, Clay County & St. Joseph Railway, began high-speed service from its station at 7th and Walnut in downtown Kansas City to St. Joseph on a route that closely paralleled the QO&KC from block 22 in North Kansas City thru Avon.  Consequently, the StJ&GI lost almost all its passenger business on its route, and the amount of freight carried could not justify continued operations. Thus the "Grand Island" avoided the expense of using the new passenger terminal and abandoned all service south of St. Joseph. Similarly, the financially distressed QO&KC declined to use the new facilities and suspended operations south of the Missouri River. In 1914 the StJ&GI gave up its lease of the 10.47-mile Grower line and the QO&KC abandoned the branch in 1917.

Hello all,

Back in March, I posted this quiz and to my surprise, there were no responses.

Therefore, I must ask, aren’t there any guesses?

Here’s a bit of fun for everyone from CB&Q fan Al Hoffman.  Here’s the trivia quiz for today.  At one time there was a single Pullman car that originated in Grand Island, Nebraska, that only operated for one year over CB&Q trackage.  Where was it going?   The only answer that is needed is the town’s destination, however, if you’d like to get bonus recognition, fill us in with more details!  Once we have the town name, I’ll fill you in on the extras.
