Ken, Any pictures of the present project? Thanks,
A local citizen has come forth to take charge of saving the Oakland Mills flagstop and has about 9 volunteers. The Henry County Historic Preservation Commission gave them funding to have the concrete floor cut around the structure and to have an electrician remove any wiring so the rest of the building could be safely demolished without damaging the railroad structure. Basically, there is more there than what anyone realized. They are now collecting funds to buy cribbing so the structure can be moved from private property to county properly temporarily until the Henry County Conservation Commission decides where to safely make its permanent home in Oakland Mills on county property in a location where it will not get flooded from the Skunk River. Henry County Heritage Trust is collecting the donations for the volunteers since it is a 503c non-profit corporation and reimbursing legitimate expenses. Repairs and board replacement will be made when the structure is in its permanent location. This is a save. Other existing depots on this line include Keokuk Union, Donnellson and Hamill.
