[CBQ] FW: [MFCL] 18 CB&Q 86 Ft box Cars to Southern in 1973?

All-

This appeared on the Modern Freight Car List about a group of CB&Q 1969 Greenville Double Door Auto Cars that went to the Southern in 1973 and apparently one car of the group that stayed on the Q.   These were in the green BURLINGTON scheme when built.

This is well beyond my era of interest but some of you may be interested in knowing some cars were sold off to the Southern and went off the CB&Q.  The post that started this discussion had the letter from the Southern archives  and I have pasted it below if you are interested.

Hm....

I wonder how much longer PAST 1987 CB&Q #15025 lasted.....

I'd almost be up for having it in my fleet IF it did last into 1988.

The Q cars were originally assigned to Pontiac service, return to GTW in Pontiac, MI.

 

As stated in that document, Southern used them for the pool out of Lansing, MI.  So with the Fender and Hood references, that should translate to stampings from the GM Lansing Metal Center.  Perhaps some could have been used nearby in GM’s Lansing Service Parts Operation.

 

By the late 70s, at least some were used in the GM stamping pool out of Parma, OH.  Or some were Parma to begin with – note the document references the Lansing assignments “starting with the tenth car of the program.”

 

As these SOU cars weathered in the 2000s and beyond, their heritage peeked through.  Look at these photos carefully:

That is BURLINGTON coming through in the top left corner of each car, in that rust pattern.

 

For the HO modelers reading this far, that would be the Tangent Undec Kit Version D.
