This list could be one of the few places where I might be considered one of the “younger folks” — and I am turning 58 tomorrow.

I found these photo videos absolutely fascinating and really contributed to my understanding of many aspects of railroading in the late 1940’s.  The fact that the photographers clearly knew their craft and had access to the railroad contributed to the value of the imagery.  And the editor who put together the videos is also very talented and worthy of appreciation.

I have also really enjoyed the first “I am a Burlington Man” articles and I would certainly like to see many more of these type of articles.  I don’t find them boring at all.  On the contrary, they bring to life the railroad that is no more.  When all
Is said and done there would be no railroad without the countless individuals who make it all work.  Their stories are valuable.  We need to capture this living history before their voices are silenced and their stories are lost.

Happy holidays everyone!

Stay safe,
Daryl

Dallas - Thank you!  In sharing the images with the Group, I wanted to add some "visual context" to my article about Dad. This was the everyday world that he (and for that much, his lifelong friend and fellow division superintendent C.J. Miller whose career was covered in Burlington Bulletin No. 64) were a part of.

The photographs reflect everyday life on the Burlington Route, both for employees like Dad and Mr. Miller, as well as for the general public who used the railroad to ride and ship freight upon.  Without seeing these photographs, younger folks today would have a difficult time understanding what life was like in 1948.

It's often said that one of the most boring things in the world is reading someone else's family history and I can understand that. Thus, by viewing the photographs, a reader can connect them with all the jobs that Dad held during the Great Depression to keep his seniority as a trainman.  Plus, this was what he "saw" on the job.

The "I am a Burlington Man" series offers a wonderful opportunity to descendants of CB&Q/C&S/FW&D employees to both memorialize their family members regardless of whatever craft or official position they held as well as tell "their story" in the context of the times they lived in.  This is living history at its best - Louis
