I always noticed that "back in the day"...no matter what those railroad "officials" were always fully dressed in business attire..ie  Suit, necktie, hat (most important of all "officialdom stature) and "high top shoes"...This dress code continued through about the mid 60's  and was still very much in effect when I "hired out" in the Rock Island training program in 1959.  There was NO WEARING OF   A " sport coat and slacks in lieu of suit and tie or even any kind of dress shirt without a tie  other than an occasional trip to the office on Saturday or Sunday.

My great, great uncle Bill Toal was a lineman on the Q. I recently acquired photos of some of the inspection cars he operated. Tragically, he was involved in a fatal accident operating one of the inspection vehicles in 1937.
