Recall that IC used similar tank style locomotives in Chicago commuter service before electrification. One still exists at the Illinois Railway Museum, no. 201. In addition, the Chicago Elevated system also used tank locomotives prior to electrification. However, the IC locomotive did have a lead truck in a 2-4-4 wheel arrangement. The elevated locomotive were built by Baldwin and Rogers and were 0-4-4 wheel arrangement. The Baldwins were Vauclain compounds. Attached is a photo of one of the El locomotives. I think the El locomotive were actually built after the Q 500 class.
