The year would be 1888 just going off of his timeline of living in Pa in 1871 for a tear then moving to Monmouth and working for the Q for 16 years. 

As for records that old? Coroners inquest at the county building, but I am not sure if anyone at the railroad or historical society would have that info.

My Great, Great Grandfather Michael Gallagher was killed when hit by a Q train in Monmouth, IL in the late 19th Century. I cannot find the date of his death anywhere. The attached is the only reference I possess. 

Are records of deaths of Q employees kept somewhere?
