     Not sure if this may be of interest to you or not but here is information on my book whish is being published on Monday August 3rd.

After several years of research and composition, my first book "Nebraska Sweet Beets-A History of Sugar Valley" will finally be officially published on Monday, August 3rd by Arcadia Publishing/History Press. The book, about 190 pages long with about 125 photos and illustrations, many not previously published, is the story of the creation of the Sugar Beet industry in the North Platte Valley of Western Nebraska and Eastern Wyoming. (Wyobraska) Beginning with a brief history of the development of beet sugar in Europe, its coming to America and its beginnings in eastern Nebraska, the book then delves deeply into the establishment of seven beet processing factories in the short time period of about twenty years between 1908 and 1928. A few of the factories came quickly with few obstacles, but the stories of the factories in Minatare, Lyman and Torrington overcame many obstacles in their development. There is also information about the failed attempts to build a factory in Bridgeport.  

               There is considerable information of the industries dependence on the railroads in its early years. The North Platte Valley Railroad was created on the north side of the river with four "beet spurs" by the Burlington RR and Great Western Sugar Company in the early 1920's. The Union Pacific was instrumental in developing two beet spurs on the south side of the river and with access to the Holly factory in south Torrington. These rail services were vital to the area factories through the 1970's.

               The emphasis of the book is on the infrastructure of the industry here and includes plot plans for each of the factories as well as some blueprints of equipment from the early years in the valley. It is my hope that the information I have gathered and assembled in one book will be of use to any future researchers interested in the industry and its impact on Wyobraska!
