As others have said, it depends on what year you're looking at. I "assume" you are asking about the EB out of Chicago to St Paul or back from St Paul to Chicago. As for GN equipment out of Minneapolis to and from Seattle, that's another story.
I've seen photos of mixed E units, 7,8 and 9's. Again, depending on the year you are looking for, the EB, NCL and TCZ were combined in the mid to late 60's.
I rode the EB (and Western Star) from Chicago to Wahpeton ND many times in the late 50's and 60's. One year, in Feb 1960 or 1961, I had a coach seat on the EB. But late in the evening, I wondered into one of the TCZ dome cars about 30 minutes outside St. Paul.
When we arrived at St Paul, I remained in the Q dome car, only to see the rest of my train head out without me! I didn't realize that the EB and TCZ consists would break up in St. Paul. I notified the
conductor, who then arranged for a car to dive me to Minneapolis where I rejoined the EB. What an experience for a teenager.

Subject: [CBQ] E’s & EB
What power was used on the EB? E 7,8,9. Depends on year? What was available? Was it all 7’s or 8’s or a mix?
Thank you for your help guys!
