Thanks for the clarification. I'm restricting my research and article to burnt 
clay, which is a big enough subject, so I'll cross this possibility off the 
list!

I suspect the rock that Winton referred to was what the Q called Guernsey Rock 
ballast obtained from a quarry just east of Guernsey WY. 
The Q track and ballast guide says "This rock is a dolamite which is a very 
hard rock and is very durable. After being crushed, all rock under 3/8" is 
screened out, and these screenings are used as ballast on branch lines, in 
yards and on secondary mainlines. It has also been used as a sub-ballast 
material on new line construction."

"Present plans are to use the Guernsey rock was used on the lines between 
Pacific Jct and Denver (via Omaha), Oreapolis to Ashland, Ashland to Ferry, 
Napier to Lincoln (via Table Rock), Lincoln to Edgemont, Alliance to Brush and 
Northport to Bonneville."

"On the Bonneville to Fromberg line it has been the practice to use a local 
material for ballast. In the past Warren limestone was used; however, this 
quarry has closed and Guernsey Rock will be used if the quarry does not reopen."

This is as of January 1, 1958.
