Bob - I didn't realize that the Q had salvaged 6ET brake systems off scrapped steam power to use on new EMC/EMD diesel switch locomotives. Makes sense knowing how frugal the Q was.  Since there was nothing wrong with the 6ET systems, they got a second life reapplied to new diesel switchers.

I'm attaching two images of the reapplied 6ET systems.  One image shows an engineer switching at Omaha, NE, in June 1948. The other shows an engineer switching at Western Avenue in Chicago, IL, in June 1948. Can you tell us what model EMC/EMD switcher(s) these were? Thanks - Louis

Louis -

The left cart appears to have a 6ET brake system on it.  This is the same brake that was used on steam locomotives (E= engine;  T=tender) and when those engines went to scrap, the ever so frugal Q removed the 6ET system and and had it installed it on the early EMC/EMD switch engines.  I don't see any brake stands (train and/or engine brakes) on the other cart so I'll say that's "under the cab floor" air brake equipment.
