I can't say anything related to standard gauge cars, but I do know that the C&S narrow gauge was looking into self-propelled cars in the '30's.  During the times I was at the CRRM, I spent lots of time in the basement going through Uncle Robert's collection of 'paper'.  In the Master Mechanic's files, there was considerable discussion with several manufacturers of Gas-Mechanical coach conversions about coaches for the South Park line.  I made a sketch or two, based on the advertising from the manufacturers, and copied out some of the discussions.  That was before everybody had an office copier, and I couldn't afford to take the papers into town to get them copied, so I typed them out on the typewriter with the 'different' type face that Bob used for the Narrow Gauge News.

As an aside...I'd guess that, when the Company gave Bob the MM's records out of the C&S roundhouse, it never occurred to them that the Engine Crews worked for him, and not the Operating Dep't,  and that all their Personnel records were in there.  Some of the Investigations were pretty funny.  That's the first place I ever saw the "I was down on the deck, putting in a fire, and I didn't see a thing" defense in print LOL
