ALL CONCERNED..as they used to say in the railroad bidness

RE: the tender matter re the 440..Here's the story...The 440 came to the RPL&N after my GF bought it from the Q in 1926.  At that time it had the conventional tender.  In 1936 it was discovered that that tender had "rusted out" and was no longer usable..

My GF purchased the "slope back "tender from the Kansas City Terminal RR in 1936 and it served the RPLN right up to  the end...Now that you know the "rest of the story" you will find if you look very very closely at the side of the tender you can see the outline of the location of the familiar triangular KC terminal emblem.  I have to admit that it's only been in fairly recent years that I, in looking at a close up picture of the 440 discovered that you can indeed see that familiar emblem..I'm not sure but I think that the KCT continued to use that familiar emblem for many years ...in fact they might still be using it if that road is still in  business under that name.

When the Q borrowed the 440 in 1940 they set the slope back tender aside and attached a square tender to authenticate the history of the engine...Also as an indication of the Burlington's penchant for  historical accuracy when the engine was displayed on "Lines west in 1940 it was re lettered as B&MR 156 which was the engine's "Birth number.  When  the 440 was moved to lines east it was relettered back to it's CB&Q  440 which number it carried after it's 1904 adoption into the CB"&Q family.   which it carried during the "festivities in Aurora.

If anyone has any questions regarding the Video and/or the 440 please ask...I love to talk about this stuff...If I don't know the answer to your question(s) I'll make one up and you'll never know the difference.

Pete

Bill - Pete will have to confirm this, but the Corbin Book shows that his beloved No. 440 (what an appropriate road number for a 4-4-0 American  type) was built by the Q at their Havelock, NE, Shops in 1916 as a Class A-2.  Only 10 years old, it was retired in July 1926 and was then bought by Pete's grandfather for further use on the family's Rockport Langdon & Northport Railroad in Missouri.

No. 440 was loaned to the Q for exhibition purposes in 1940, if I remember correctly, and displayed at various stations on Lines East. In the DVD, No. 440 is showing departing the RL&N under tow with a slope back tender, yet it was displayed and returned back with a box tender. May be Pete can explain what happened..... I'm attaching a photograph taken of No. 440 while on display in Aurora, IL.

It's unfortunate that No. 440 met the torch when the railroad was abandoned and dismantled at the close of World War Two. Yes indeed, Pete's DVD is full of, as you put it, great historical footage.  I, too, thought the Q ditcher footage was excellent.  Best Regards - Louis

Louis,
I'll second your recommendation. The DVD is very well done and has a lot of great historical footage. I especially enjoyed watching a very young Pete in the cab of the RPL&N steam locomotive with a borrowed Q ditcher working the short line.

All - For those of you who are snowbound, or close to it, on Lines East and West, a great way to pass the time would be to watch Pete Hedgpeth's recently released DVD entitled "CB&Q and Other Railroad Memories With Thanks To Jim Christen."  The DVD's running time is an hour and twenty eight minutes. It covers a wealth of memories from Pete's lifetime fascination with railroading starting with his family's Rockport Langdon & Northern Railroad short line, then on to the Q and concluding with the Rock Island.
