Dick and Group:

Here's the answer from Bill Schultz:

The short answer is "yes."  Here's the long version.

Pre-war bullet-end dining-parlor cars (the Passenger Department didn't refer to them as "observations") Fountain and Star replaced the KCZ's separate dining-refreshment and dome-parlor cars beginning July 7, 1960, and ran properly-pointed at the rear of 35-36.  With the KCZ/Nebraska Zephyr consolidation east of Galesburg effective October 28, 1962, Fountain and Star operated bullet-end forward immediately behind the Chicago-KCMO baggage-and-mail car (account no diaphragm on the bullet-end of either car) to enable one conductor to work the consolidated train and to simplify removal (westbound) and addition (eastbound) on extra chair car(s) at West Quincy.  Diaphragms were added to Spirit (November '62) and Star (July '63), enabling the cars to run properly-pointed (after which Fountain was used as a substitute for either Spirit or Star, but had to be operated bullet-end forward).  Subsequently, it was discovered that both were rough-riders with another car or cars tacked-on behind (a daily occurrence east of Galesburg; an almost-daily occurrence between GT and West Quincy, plus added switching delay at WQCY), and bullet-end-forward operation resumed in May '64 and continued until the January '68 retirement of the articulated NZ trainsets, after which the KCZ's passenger-carrying cars moved to the rear of the consolidated train (with the bullet-end dining-parlor properly-pointed) until the KCZ was discontinued in April '68.

This question is from returning BRHS member, Dick  Schultz:

The 300 series buffet/lounge/obsv. cars built for the Gen Perhing Zephyr (Silver Star), and general service got around a lot during the late 50's, early 60's. In reading about the KCZ, ARZ and the Zephyr-Rocket Silver Star showed up from time to time. I am trying to find out if Silver Fountain ever saw service on the KCZ. Can you or anyone help?  Thanks Dick Schultz

Please reply to the group and to rnpschu@southslope.net with your answers.
