Bill Shapotkin will discuss the Chicago, Milwaukee & Gary, a railroad intended to be an outer belt around the Chicago area that was never completed and never directly served any of its namesake cities. To bail out a business associate, Rockefeller forced the Milwaukee Road (the Saint Paul before the first bankruptcy) to acquire this heavily indebted railroad in 1922 by lease, one of a number of serious business mistakes that contributed to the first bankruptcy of the Milwaukee Road.
