Hi,
I am proud to announce the release of my new book, Romance of the
Rails. I wrote this book to reconcile my love for passenger trains
(including urban rail transit) with my skepticism of transportation subsidies
of all kinds.
More than half the book is about the history of passenger rail in the
United States going back to 1825. I suspect that even the most ardent amateur
historians among you will find facts in here that you didn't know.
Before writing the book, for example, I knew that Ralph Budd, as
president of the CB&Q, conceived and name the Burlington Zephyr.
But I didn’t know that he also the godfather of the intercity bus industry,
having been the catalyst for the creation of both Greyhound and Trailways. Nor
did I know that, after retiring from the Burlington at the age of 70, he
became chair of the fledgling Chicago Transit Authority.
The last part of the book is a policy analysis that looks at each
different kind of passenger rail: Amtrak, high-speed rail, heavy rail, light
rail, commuter rail, and streetcars. You may or may not be as skeptical of
transportation subsidies as I am, but you will still find this of interest as
well.
I hope you enjoy the book.
