Thanks for all the answers. Since this question is specifically for Q operations in the 60s, I think 48" wide would be the correct width.

I sent a copy of this page to someone at the Burlington Junction who actually loads these cars and will post his answer when I get it. Not all wallboard is 48" wide anymore. They are also shipping 54" wide wallboard and the lengths are usually 8' or
12'. Nine foot ceilings are popular now and have changed things.
