"The hoses are there to MU with older units air brake systems; "modern" units MU air brake system via in cab computer so hoses do not need to be coupled and cut-in." That's not true. Air hoses still need to be connected between all units because only the air brake valves on one locomotive in a consist are cut-in. Hooking up the MU air hoses creates a single unified air system. Now it is true, in Distributed Power operation, that the computer of the lead locomotive controls the air brakes of the remote consist(s). However, the same rule holds true that only one locomotive in a Distributed Power consist has its air brake valves cut-in, so the MU air hoses must be connected between all locomotives in a DP consist as well.
