Standard practice for most lines was that the 27-pin electrical MU jumper was located up above.  The various air MU hoses were down below, and were duplicated on each side.  You did not have to have BOTH sides connected - as long as all the various functions were connected it was OK.  Above each MU hose, there was a small metal badge plate permanently attached to the end plate (permanently except if they got knocked off, that is) stamped "MR" (main reservoir),  "A&R", "ACT", or whatever that hose was for.  The obvious intent was to connect like to like.  The hoses were arranged on each side so it should, usually, correspond with what would be found across from it on another engine.  Each pipe had a cock which would be opened or closed as appropriate.

It was always important to do a test of the air brakes on the units after adding to the consist.  Occasionally you would forget to open one cock, or perhaps some pipe had been capped off, and you would have to go looking for the reason things did not work as intended.

Q locomotives had MU connections to either side of the nose and additional MU connections above the anti-climber.  What was the purpose of each of these connections?
