Many of the new SP-SSW units as well as DRGW were handled by Rock Island to Tucumcari and Denver.

Tom,

Prior to July, 1971, few railroads took delivery of new locomotives in the state of Illinois. The Q’s new power went to Lincoln as freight for acceptance. Santa Fe’s went to Ft. Madison, IA Others were shipped elsewhere, usually at a location on the purchasing railroad. New locomotives that were not part of the operating consist, were en route to their delivery points. The reason for out of state delivery was that Illinois law required payment of sales tax on capital equipment delivered in the state. In 1970, Illinois ratified a new constitution which eliminated the capital equipment sales tax. That constitution wetn into effect July 1, 1971 and remains, with amendments, in force. After July, 1971, most out of state railroads took live delivery of new locomotives with an in state railroad. Horsepower hours were traded for transportation. The Q’s Clyde facility was frequently the acceptance point for a number of deliveries. Western Pacific, Union Pacific, Rio Grande and others as well as Q were common delivery occurrences. I spent a year and a half at Clyde in the early ‘70s assigned by EMD to, among other things, pre servicing new locomotives at any time of day or night. I also rode many of them out of Cicero a short distance to ensure their proper operation. Among those pre serviced while I was there were the last of the UP DDA40X units.

SP and SSW units were delivered through C&EI and later SSW in Chicago and Santa Fe took took delivery of their locomotives at Corwith. Eastern RRs also took delivery at their own facilities in the Chicago area.

There is a photo in Spoor CB&Q Vol. 4 p. 90 of two SSW SD45's being delivered in 1969 and these are the trailing units in the loco consist. Just yesterday I found a photo on Castle Graphics website of the first UP U50C being delivered in late 1969. It is sitting at Clyde with a Q SD24. (This is a conundrum because Jan's caption says the photo is 8-1969 but the first and only U50C's built in 1969 are shown as 5001 in 10-1969 and 5000 in 11-1969.) I seem to recall something about SP&S Alco Centuries being delivered via the Q but with the locomotive dead-in-train. As late as 1969 there was an NP F3A-FTB-FTA set being traded in which was also in-consist trailing a Q U28B and Q SD24. Since there were only two locomotives on the train it makes me wonder whether the NP F-units were used as power on their own funeral train! It is also the only way I can see running FT's on my layout, but what a lashup!!

MUing a dead unit to the road power pays a little more account increased weight on drivers. And yes it counts whether its working or not. Also with some units you will get wheelslip(wheel lock) protection by MUing a dead unit.

Hello,

I hope the group doesn't made a question that's not directly about Burlington Route. I collect mechanical calculators and recently bought one off Ebay that I cannot find anything about on-line. It's called the "Burlington Adder" and it's logo is very similar to the Burlington Route logo, only with "Adder" instead of "Route". It even uses the same style of lettering. It has a patent date of 1912 listed, so it's the right vintage. Since I found no vintage advertisements for it, it might have been made with this name only for use by Burlington Route employees. The adder itself is a simple device of the kind meant to make adding columns of figures more accurate.

There are still photos on EBay if anyone is interested. You can search Sold listings for 322894303726 or use this link: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=322894303726&_in_kw=1&_ex_kw=&_sacat=0&LH_Sold=1&_udlo=&_udhi=&_samilow=&_samihi=&_sadis=15&_stpos=63304&_sargn=-1%26saslc%3D1&_salic=1&_sop=12&_dmd=1&_ipg=50&LH_Complete=1 https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=322894303726&_in_kw=1&_ex_kw=&_sacat=0&LH_Sold=1&_udlo=&_udhi=&_samilow=&_samihi=&_sadis=15&_stpos=63304&_sargn=-1%26saslc%3D1&_salic=1&_sop=12&_dmd=1&_ipg=50&LH_Complete=1

John, That is a very nice item which the manufacturer was not bashful in using a proven high quality logo for. I have some other products that borrowed the Burlington trademark with slight alterations. Coffee, overalls, cigars, and a furniture company in Burlington named C&E that put out a glass paperweight that had the logo which read, "Burlington for a square deal" I'll bet others have found similar pieces. What say you Dave Lotz? Archie Hayden
