Thread-topic: [CBQ] Railroading dangers

Pete

I’ve checked the magazine and it is definitely shown as “Astell”. According to Wikipedia, Axtell was incorporated as a village in 1885 when the B&MR extended to that point, and was named for a railroad worker.

Not to be "knitpicky" and it may be a TYPO.. but the first named town namled should read  AXTELL  rather than ASTELL.

That's one I've never heard of before. Snake and dog bites indeed but never a

Panther !

Mention has often been made of the potential dangers of railroading but I can’t recollect any tales such as this one from 1887, 130 years ago yesterday -

Engineer Markham and his fireman, on the Burlington & Missouri River road, were attacked by a panther while repairing a wheel of the locomotive between Astell and Minden, Neb., November 20, and both were severely lacerated before the animal was killed. The latter measured six feet in length and weighed over 200 pounds.
